Cardiac Science

Cardiac Science is a global leader in the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of medical products for use in cardiology. The company's headquarters are in Washington and has more than 500 employees worldwide. The company also has offices in two other US states (California and Wisconsin), Central Europe (Denmark, France, UK), and China. The company also maintains sales and distribution networks in more than 100 countries.

Company History

The company had its beginnings in 1913 when it was founded by F.F. Burdick and F.A. Anderson as the Burdick Company. It was a pioneer of electrocardiograph technology, and the Burdick brand of ECG devices has become well-known and trusted by cardiologists and medical practitioners.

In 1991, Cardiac Science Inc. was formed to develop software to analyze heart rhythms, called RHYTHMx, which became the foundation for the first fully automatic bedside defibrillator. In 2001, the company acquired Survivalink, including the latter's STAR biphasic AED. All AED products came to be known under the Powerheart brand.

Further organizational changes occurred in later years. Quinton Cardiology Systems acquired Burdick in 2002. Three years later, Quinton and Cardiac Science merged as Cardiac Science Corporation. This significant event unified the most trusted brands in cardiology devices - Burdick, Powerheart, Quinton, and HeartCentrix. Then in 2010, the company became a subsidiary of Opto Circuits Ltd. of India.

Products

Cardiac Science products are designed to detect early stages of heart disease and monitor heart activity, especially during an emergency. Products include AED defibrillators, ECG monitors, cardiac testing monitors, diagnostic workstations, Holter monitors, cardiac rehabilitation devices, and data management systems. The company also provides software, training and technical support for its products.

Their AED defibrillators are portable and can automatically diagnose life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. They also treat them through application of electrical therapy to allow the heart to reestablish regular rhythm. The devices can easily be used by laypeople and are found at public locations such as school clinics, airports and restaurants.

The ECG machines and diagnostic workstations detect any abnormalities in heartbeats so that they can be treated promptly. Cardiac Science's stress test machines can accurately detect the ability of a patient's heart to respond to external stress.

Patients can attach a portable Cardiac Science Holter monitor on their belts, which serves as an ECG device. This little device can capture ECG samples over a 24-hour period on its LCD screen. It has a removable compact flash card that can be removed to send out data immediately.

The Cardiac Rehab system facilitates record-keeping of cardiac rehabilitation patients. This device is easy to use, saving time in recording data on a patient's progress.

Cardiac Science's Data Management system integrates patient records with hospital billing and other databases. A comprehensive record can be accessed with just the patient's ID number.

Through their many years of innovation, Cardiac Sciences has developed a broad range of life-saving products. Their products have treated patients everywhere for serious heart conditions requiring immediate medical attention.
